MORE ABOUT RANDY

Randy Ponzio was one of Vancouver’s most promising up and coming musicians. In November of 2011, Randy was reported missing in Vancouver’s downtown eastside 24 hours after leaving an upscale restaurant in China Town. Immediately his friends and fans jumped into action, initiating tens of thousands of people in a social media campaign as well as hundreds pounding the streets with posters. Randy was a well-respected member of Vancouver’s independent music scene and press on Randy’s disappearance was soon across the nation. Three short days later, however, the hopes of thousands turned to sorrow when the news spread of Randy’s passing.

The outpouring of condolence and support reverberated from around the world in the wake of this tragedy for Randy left behind a legacy of humanitarianism, love and support to all those people who knew him. Prior to moving to Vancouver, he opened a birthing clinic in the Phillipines, worked with children in Mexico and most recently with humanitarian efforts in Kenya. Locally, his small acts of kindness didn’t go unnoticed — doing benefit shows for Bavubuka Foundation, the Japan Tsunami effort, raising money for Downtown Eastside causes or just making sandwiches for those in need. He supported his musical friends in their projects, producing, writing and collaborating with many local musicians.

In the midst of all this, he was recording his new album, receiving top honours at Shore FM’s 2011 Song Search, performing several shows a month, even busking on the streets of Vancouver. Last summer, with his star on the rise, he opened for Ziggy Marley at the Vogue Theatre and Ky-Mani Marley at the Commodore Ballroom.

Randy may have been a man of many pursuits, but he always put his family first. All of his friends knew that the purpose for his success was to provide for his children, Shae, Jalen and Kairah. He always put his kids first – they were the light and the love in his life. He was a good father, a good friend and a good man and this benefit concert is dedicated to raising as much money as we can for the family he left behind.
